Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about translation, sworn translation, notary and consular procedures.

What is translation?

Translation is the accurate and complete transfer of a text’s meaning, style and integrity from a source language into a target language. For official documents, not only the words but also the legal nature and correct terminology of the document are preserved.

What is sworn translation?

A sworn translation is an official translation made by a sworn translator who has taken an oath before a notary and is certified with the translator’s stamp and signature. Such translations are accepted as valid by official institutions.

What is a notarized translation? How does it differ from a sworn translation?

A notarized translation is a sworn translation that is additionally certified by a notary. While a sworn translation carries the translator’s certification, a notarized translation is also officially approved by the notary — this is usually required for courts, consulates and official procedures.

What is a consular translation / consular approval?

A consular translation is the sworn translation of documents to be submitted to a country’s consulate into the relevant language, with approval by the consulate or the district/provincial authority when required. It is frequently requested for visa applications and procedures abroad.

What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is an official certification that gives a document international validity among countries party to the Hague Convention. Apostilled documents are accepted in other member countries without the need for further consular approval.

How is the translation fee calculated?

The translation fee is usually calculated based on the character count of the target text. The standard unit in the industry is 1,000 characters without spaces (one translation page). The document’s language, technical difficulty and delivery time (urgent/same-day) affect the price. Send your document for a free quote.

How is the “characters without spaces” count calculated?

Characters without spaces are counted by including all letters, digits and punctuation in the text, excluding spaces. In Microsoft Word, the “Characters (no spaces)” value in the Word Count window is used. In the translation industry, 1,000 characters without spaces = 1 page.

How long does translation take? Is same-day possible?

Delivery time depends on the length and language of the document. Short documents can often be delivered the same day, even within a few hours. With our urgent translation service we quickly complete time-sensitive work.

Which documents require sworn translation?
