What Is an Apostille and How to Get One?

An Apostille is an international certification issued under the Hague Convention (1961) that makes a document officially recognized in another country. An apostilled document is accepted in other member states without further consular legalization.

In Türkiye, apostilles are issued by the Judicial Justice Commissions for court and judicial documents, and by Governorships and District Governorships for administrative documents. Diplomas, birth certificates, marriage certificates and powers of attorney often require an apostille.

A sworn translation may be needed before or after the apostille. Usually the document is apostilled first, then both the document and the apostille are translated into the target language and notarized.
